The Prince Georges County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has begun a study of the Greater Chillum community, which includes the neighborhoods of Avondale, Carole Highlands, Hampshire Knolls, and Lewisdale. The project will concentrate on developing a comprehensive list of needs and improvement strategies with an emphasis on defining and facilitating neighborhood conservation, pedestrian safety and access, and commercial revitalization strategies and programs.
The project has a variety of goals with a primary focus on public outreach and engagement, economic development, housing, pedestrian safety, and appropriate land uses. The project team shall meet the following objectives:
Build upon existing relationships, and develop new relationships with the community to gather information and garner support for the plan.
Determine if land use changes are needed to implement plan recommendations.
Develop recommendations for improving pedestrian safety and access within the existing transportation network.
Develop recommendations to enhance community character and distinguish the area as a distinctive place within the County.
Outline approaches to support and improve existing housing, identify opportunities for new residential development, and address issues of foreclosure.
Prepare economic development strategies to improve and promote new businesses and real estate development in the area.
Provide graphic illustrations of key recommendations that meet plan objectives.
