The Prince George’s Planning Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Better Block. The Better Block Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goals are to educate, equip, and empower communities and their leaders to reshape and reactivate built environments to promote the growth of healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. Better Block will work with our team and community members to design and fabricate a mobile unit for county placemaking efforts. This container will hold and transport rapidly deployable street furniture and other modular build items to help communities create vibrant, flexible public space.
Better Block’s team will rethink a 20-foot shipping container, which will serve as storage when not activated, and as a pop-up kiosk and marketing tool while activated. Along with placemaking elements, such as seating, games, and lighting, Better Block will also work with local stakeholders to determine custom-built elements that will accentuate placemaking activities.
Together, we will create a unit that can not only engage the community but also activate public spaces.
Potential activation areas include Suitland, Upper Marlboro and Capitol Heights. Project website page is forthcoming and a discussion of social distancing placemaking activities.
This fall, Prince George's Planning Department and the Better Block will hold a series of community kickoff events which will introduce the Better Block team and the concept of tactical urbanism, and open up a survey process to gather public opinion and community leaders that will help guide the project. Please check back in the upcoming weeks for kickoff dates.
